How to Tell If You Have Iron in Your Well Water
You usually do not need a lab to suspect iron. The classic signs are hard to miss:

The Three Types of Iron — and Why It Matters
"Iron" is not one single problem. The form your iron takes determines how we treat it, which is why a system that works great at one house fails at another.
Ferrous iron (clear-water iron). This iron is fully dissolved, so the water looks perfectly clear straight from the tap — then turns orange as it sits and the iron meets air. At low to moderate levels, a properly sized water softener can remove it along with your hardness.
Ferric iron (red-water iron). This iron has already oxidized, so the water looks rusty or orange the moment it comes out of the tap. It needs to be physically filtered out, usually with an oxidizing iron filter or an aeration system rather than a softener alone.
Iron bacteria. These naturally occurring microorganisms thrive in iron-rich wells. They are not a direct health risk, but they produce slimy reddish-brown buildup, staining, and odors, and they can foul treatment equipment. Iron bacteria often need a well "super chlorination" to knock them back, in addition to the right filtration.
Manganese frequently rides along with iron and causes its own black or dark-brown staining. When iron, manganese, hardness, and sometimes hydrogen sulfide all show up together — which is common in our region — you need a system designed to handle the whole combination, not just one piece of it.
